Spring Awakening with Steinhardt Stage Company

This spring I team up with Adam Fleming and the Steinhardt Stage Company for an ever so timely Spring Awakening. This adaptation by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik screams (and sings) ever more loudly in the age of Betsy Devos and attacks on Planned Parenthood and the National Endowment for the Arts. How far have we actually come from Wedekind's Germany of the late 1800's and how close do we remain to the same issues that plagued his adolescence?

In our first collaboration together, Adam Fleming and I have approached this piece with a commitment to ensemble and physical storytelling, aided by the amazing young design team of Christopher Metzger (Clothing) and Anthony Freitas (Scenic and Lighting), that simultaneously explores the lives of Wendla and Melchior and Moritz as well as what it means to bring attention to the craft and art of ensemble. In the traditions of the Poor Theatre and the Living Theatre, this Spring Awakening is a fresh, immediate and urgent experience that asks the ensemble and our audiences to eschew the old adage of "Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy the Show" in favor of a more empowering invitation to

Lean In, Engage and __________.

Join us March 30th - April 2nd (Evenings at 8, Matinees at 2) at the Pless Black Box off of Washington Square! We look forward to sharing this piece with you.
